The original responsibilities of Tring Charities were to provide benefit for the deserving poor in the Ancient Parish of Tring, which included Tring Town and the villages of Long Marston, Wilstone and Puttenham. Tring Charities today comprises a consolidated group of three charities-The Consolidated Charities of the Parish of Tring, The Poor’s Allotment or Pest House Piece and the Allotment for Fuel or the Poor Land. Right up until the end of the 1940’s, bread and coal was given to the deserving poor who applied for a ticket from the Trustees for a baker or coal merchant of their choice. In it’s hay-day, the Trustees would hand over as many as 500 tickets a year!
In 1961 the three charities were consolidated as Tring Charities.
Tring Charities was at one time managed by the Vicar and Church Wardens of the Church of St Peter and St Paul with support from Trustees nominated by the Tring Urban District Council (as it was then known) and the Tring Rural Parish Council. Formal links with the church were broken in 1983 when a revised scheme was issued by the Charity Commissioners who appointed “eleven competent persons” as Trustees.
Tring Charities has an excellent reputation for providing homes for older people in financial need and aims to provide a safe and secure environment for its residents who are expected to live independently, without supervision and to care for themselves. Tring Charities does not operate care home facilities as it has no warden.
Properties are located close to Tring town centre and residents can conveniently enjoy what this has to offer.
The secretary carries out the day to day management of the charity while eleven Trustees look after strategic matters.
The Trustees
The Trustees all live in the local community and have a broad cross-section of experience relevant to the work of the Charity. They give their services voluntarily.
Two Trustees are nominated by Tring Rural Parish Council, two by Tring Town Council and there are seven co-opted Trustees.
